Another Half Ironman in the Books!

So after my last (poor) showing at Deuces Wild HIM up in Show Low, AZ I decided I should give this Half Ironman thing another shot and see if I couldn't do any better. OK, the truth is I had already signed up for a ton of these races and they were going to happen whether I liked it or not. Next up on the (s)hitlist was the Mountain Man Half Ironman in Flagstaff, AZ. This would be another race at altitude (7000') so I had a better idea of what to expect this time around but I wasn't sure if it'd make a difference or not.

My First Ever Half Ironman Reviewed!

So far, my illustrious triathlon career (now in its second year) has consisted of shorter races, specifically Sprint and Olympic-distance. For whatever reason I decided to sign up for a Half-Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) this year. What possessed me to do this? I have no idea. What possessed me to sign up for THREE of them this year (among other races)? I don't know, but I should probably have my head examined.

Encounters with the Homeless

Upon moving to Tucson I quickly realized there's a lot more homeless people here than I'd seen in northern NJ, NYC, etc. I'd never really had any encounters with these folks up until last week when in the span of a day I had three separate run-ins...

Premature End of Season Review

As it turns out, the previous entry about the end of the season was a bit premature. Upon moving to Arizona I did a couple more triathlons and races:

November 11 - Blue Water Olympic Triathlon
November 17 - El Tour de Tucson
December 8 - Anthem Holiday Classic Sprint Triathlon

So far this year I've done:

April 5 - El Tour de Phoenix
April 6 - DCB Adventures 2.4 mile Open Water Swim

For the rest of the year I'm planning on doing:

May 18 - Tempe International Triathlon
May 31 - Dueces Wild Half-Ironman Triathlon
July 6 - Firecracker Sprint Triathlon
July 20 - Mountain Man Half-Ironman Triathlon
October 12 - Tinfoilman Sprint Triathlon
October 26 - SOMA Half-Ironman Triathlon

Italicized races are ones that I haven't signed up for yet. There's also the opportunity to add some more races (cycling, running, etc) as the summer progresses as well.

End of Season Review

Well, it looks like the end of the season is here. With my move to Arizona in about 11 days and me bordering on the level of 'burnt out', it looks like I'm done racing this summer (on the east coast at least). Here's a wrap-up of my races (almost all of which were "firsts" for me):

April 29 - Long Branch Half Marathon
May 29 - Rayway Mayor's Day 5K
June 16 - Wyckoff Sprint Triathlon
July 8 - Randolph Sprint Triathlon
August 19 - Harriman Sprint Triathlon
September 9 - Buckman Olympic Triathlon
September 16 - Silvermine Time Trial

I think that just about covers it. Of course, once you throw in the High Point to Cape May bike ride that's a pretty full summer. A couple running races, a handful of triathlons and a bike race to top it all off. I'm pretty happy with my performances overall... though it's pretty surprising that being decent at triathlons doesn't carry over to running or cycling races. What I thought were good performances ended up being bottom of the barrel compared to the folks who focus only on one event.

So what's on tap for next year? Well, everything I've read/heard says that Tucson is the top-spot for winter training so maybe I'll be able to work on my biking and running skills. I don't know, I really don't want to think about that right now -- I'll worry about that in a couple weeks.
